If you look down at your knee you will notice that it bends backwards
whereas your ankle bends forwards. Next time you see a bird, have a good
look at the joint in the middle of its leg do you notice that it
bends forwards! This is because the joint in the middle of a bird's
leg is its ankle, not its knee. Its knee is high up on the leg, usually
under the feathers. Elongating the foot by placing the ankle half way up
the leg is Nature's way of making a bird's leg longer, thinner and
lighter, with the heavy muscles only at the top near the body.
